Yesterday's vintage inspired engagement session had us longing for the days when hanging out in soda shops and sipping through cute straws was the thing to do. When wearing cherry red lipstick wasn't just for parties and when Coca-Cola was always served in chilled bottles. So that got us thinking, "For all these retro wedding themes we're seeing, shouldn't there be a cocktail that sends us all back to that era?" We think, yes!
Don't you love the warm bourbon and cola hues looking great in contrast with the bright red? Perfect fall color combination. Imagine this paired with some throwback small bites like mini burgers and fries in paper cones or even as a midnight snack with a petite vanilla ice cream cone...mmm!
Cherry-Bourbon Cola
(adapted from 'La La Lola' by Jill Schulster via Saveur)
1 pint of cherries, pitted
2 oz. Tennessee bourbon
3 cups of cola
1 tsp. of fresh lemon juice
1. Begin by pouring 1 cup of cola in a glass and let it go flat. Pour flat soda into ice cub trays and freeze. Next, muddle cherries in a bowl. Add 1 oz. bourbon and 1 cup cola into bowl; cover and chill.
2. Place half of cherry mash and 1 tsp. bourbon-cola mixture in a double rocks glass; Mix remaining remaining ounce of bourbon and lemon juice in a shaker with ice; shake to chill. Strain into glass with cherries; add 4 or 5 cola ice cubes. Garnish with a swizzle stick and enjoy!
Serves 2
Making swizzle sticks is a super easy way to add character to your cocktails and your guests will love them. Simply purchase sticks from your local craft or party store, select ribbon in your wedding colors (approximately 1/3 to 1/2 inch wide), and trim the ribbon to 3.5 inch sections and tie onto each swizzle stick. You can display them in a glass or jar on the bar and ask your bartender to serve them with your signature cocktails.
Are there flavors, colors, or themes for cocktails that you'd like us to experiment with and post the results? It's hard work, but someone's got to do it! Let us know in the comments below and we'll report back, promptly!
